Lithium batteries safety : Thermal runaway prevention – Level 2

Objectives

To understand and grasp Li-ion battery safety flaws, learn how to limit the risk in battery design.

  • Part 1: Thermal runaway of a Li-ion battery
    • Li-ion battery composition (reminder)
    • Thermal runaway mechanism (reminder)
    • Presentation of factors that can lead to thermal runaway
    • Physical quantities for monitoring and application
  • Part 2: Failure analysis of a Li-ion battery
    • Methodology and FMEA
    • Protection at the cell level (reminder)
    • Characterization methods
    • Theoretical examples of battery failure analysis
  • Part 3: BMS architecture
    • Basic functions of a BMS
    • Battery management system architecture
    • Key parameters of a BMS
    • Cell connection/BMS
    • BMS software
  • Part 4 (Optional): “Practical cases” ( + 0.5 day) – on SERMA site
    • Case study of a BMS failure analysis (examples)
    • Immersion in the failure analysis laboratory
